“Young Professional” Kick-off in Harvey

Monday, January 28th, 2008

A small group of Harvey citizens hosted a gathering at JW’s Restaurant on January 21st, 2008 to see if there is a demand for a Young Professionals group.  The cool weather didn’t keep people from coming out and enjoying an evening to socialize and learn about the YP network at the January Jamaican Jam.  There were about 35 people in attendance, which was a great turnout for our first event.  We are still going over the surveys to see if there is enough interest in starting a group.  We hope to host another evening to discuss ideas to get people involved in the community.  For more information email cherie@harveynd.com or call 701-324-2000.

St. Aloisius Senior Companions

Monday, January 28th, 2008

Senior Companions take pride in serving with compassion and caring as friends.  Part of the St. Aloisius Community Volunteer Programs, these volunteers are healthy older adults who help other adults live independently.  They visit others in their home, providing socialization, checking on their well-being and helping with light household tasks.  They alert the doctors and family member to potential health problems and provide short periods of relief to primary caregivers such as family members.  Without the help of Senior Companions, many older adults would not be able to continue living at home.   Senior Companions are over 60 years of age; can volunteer 20 hours a week or more; have a limited income; and love to help their neighbors.  Senior Companions become part of a team of caregivers.  To find out if you are eligible to join this team of caregivers, contact Tammy Neurohr at St. Aloisius Medical Center.   scs-and-tn-and-df.JPG Picture:Back row – left to right:  Walter Doubek, Sharon Seehafer, Bev Better, Betty Badke, Darlene Frueh (office assistant),Front row – Esther Doubek, Tammy Neurohr, (coordinator), Irene Hauser, Gloria Engen and Ramona Keller.

Headstart Food Pantry Project

Monday, January 28th, 2008

headstart-blog-pic.jpgThe Early Explorers Head Start and Early Head Start Parent Group chose to implement a learning project to teach the students the importance of giving back to their community.  They chose to coordinate a food pantry project in which children were asked to bring non-perishable foods to donate to the local food pantry.  The project also included a lesson from Tammy Neurohr, St. Aloisius Community Volunteer Program, on the many ways that we can give by volunteering.  The kids were very interested in learning how they can help others by giving of their time, talents and gifts, even as pre-schoolers.  “We feel that this was a positive and successful project, as the children took pride in bringing food items and have come to understand what our local food pantry is all about,” said Neurohr.
