The second annual Mr. HHS is taking place once again at the Harvey High School Gym on February first at 7:30 p.m. The fee is $1 per person. This gives the male students to be crowned Mr. HHS. The contestants will be judged on purple and gold attire, talent, and questions. After Mr. HHS, there is Taste of Harvey. This is a fundraiser where different organizations bring food and serve it to the public. Please come and enjoy a fun filled evening with your family. 

The past year four communities within our area participated in the NDSU Center for Vitality “HORIZONS” program. The communities involved include Maddock, harvey Anamoose and bowden. This required community surveying, study circles, and leadership training. The three communities that are connected by Highway 52 recognized the opportunity to bridge our communities. Since the blogging training representatives from harvey Anamoose, and bowden have met and plan to met in febuary to move forward with strengthening our communities together. Take it Back is not an organization, it is a philosphy that gives young people the opportunity to change how their community percieves underage drinking. The facts are alcohol kills more kids than all illegal drugs combined, everyday 5,400 young people under age 16 take their first drink, kids under 21 spend over $5 billion on alcohol.

TAKE it BACK event is planned for March 4,2006 beginning at 6:30pm with a pizza party and speaker jacob howe from SADD. All kids age 12-21 are invited to the harvey High School for this event. Come meet jacob, who is an 18 year old from Valley City ND.

Harvey has an active SADD group which represents Students Againest Distructive Decisions. Beckee Keller is the advisor through the Wells County District health Unit.

The St aloisius medcical Center Community Volunteer Program administrates the Faith in Action program for the harvey area. Specifically Faith in Action provides volunteers for people needing a ride to medical appt. that can not be done locally. The past two years alfred and Verna Weisser have provided 16,000miles of transportaion to medical appt. The FIA pays a mileage stipend to the volunteers. Our program is so blessed by the Weissers and other volunteers. We are so glad we can provide this service through the local medical institution.

Dakota Medical Foundation is providing a Match program on Febuary 14 for any donation to the Faith in Action Program of $25 or more through the impactgiveback.org website. Our FIA program is eliglble to recieve up to $5000 in match funding .

The sisters of mary of the presentation (SMP) have always emphasized the importance of educational opportunities for their employees. St. aloisius Medical Center is a SMP Health systems organization and has accepted the task of continuing leadership training, in addition to inviting the communitiy to attend also. St. Aloisius Medical center’s Employee Assisance Program will be presenting two educational opportunities on febuary 13 in the Presentation Center at St. Aloisius medical Center.

The first program begins at 10:30am-12noon is titled Supervising Approaches to conflict Resolution. This class will address levels of conflict, styles of conflict management and address “desk rage” on the job anger management.

The second class is offered two times, 1pm-2pm and again at 2:30pm-3pm, this class is titled Managing Negativity. the session will provide ways to deal with negativity around us and identify our responsibility for change.

Every year the Harvey National Honor Society puts together a blood drive at the high school. The goal is to recruit teachers and even students to donate blood. Since blood is a constant need in the hospital it is very important to get as many donaters as possible because many times they will not take certain people’s blood due to low iron and other deficiencies. Having the blood drive at the high school gives students and teachers a chance to give blood during the school day and may even decide to donate on a regular basis. Last year the National Honor Society did a great job spreading the word about the blood drive and had the highest number of donors in years.

Each year the National Honor Society sponsors Daffodil Days. NHS sends out order forms to local businesses to order their daffodils. The daffodils sell for 10 daffodils for $10.00. All the procedes will go to the National Cancer Society. The daffodils arrive around the March 15, and then the students will hand out the daffodils to the people who ordered them. Daffodil Days not only brightens a persons day, but can also save a patients life dealing with cancer.

Every weekend, volenteer groups or associations work at the movie theater, not because they have to, but for laughs and fun. Everyone gets a different job. One or two work the register and get candy under the counter. One person fills pops. & Another person fills up popcorn. I’ve done all of these before and I have a good time. On top of that, you get to visit with different people as they come in. After your done working, you get into the movie for free and get a pop and popcorn for free as well.

On Halloween night, FFA and FBLA went around town and collected food for the food pantry. Each member of the organizations teamed up into a group of 2 or 3 members and took at least one street in Harvey to collect food. Once the food was all collected, the members brought it back to the Lion’s Club for them to sort out and while waiting to see how many pounds of food collected, the students ate pizza from Pizza Ranch. Over 1100 pounds of food plus more was collected that night!

On Saturday Dec 8 and Sunday Dec 9, the Centennial Singers presented ‘A Festival of Lessons and Carols’ concert to the community. Local clergy from the Central Dakota Ministerial Association read the lessons and the Centennial Singers (a male community choir whose membership is from several central North Dakota communities) sang carols to help reflect on the readings. A freewill offering was collected and will be shared with the CDMA. A total of approximately 500 people were in attencance and the local radio station broadcast the concert live.
