Wells Co. Mentoring

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

Wells Co. Mentoring was established in 2003 and is now under the St. Aloisius Community Volunteer Program.  The mission of WCM is to strengthen our young people by providing them with caring, positive relationships.

We feel that every child can benefit by having an extra caring adult in their life.  We focus on teaching young people leadership skills and providing them with tools to make healthy choices.  Mentoring has proven to be one of the most effective prevention efforts for today’s youth.

Mentors are screened and carefully matched with a young person, then asked to spend a minimum of one hour per week or four hours per month with their youth.  Training is provided around common youth issues and information from the latest in mentoring research.  Fun monthly group activities are offered, along with opportunities to participitate in service work, the development of leadership skills and training on current prevention efforts.

WCM typically has approximately 50 adults or teens matched with young people.  According to Mark LoMurray, former director of the ND Rural and Native Mentoring Project, Wells Co. Mentoring is one of the most successful mentoring groups in the state.

For more information on the Wells Co. Mentoring Program, contact Tammy Neurohr at 324-4651 Ext. 342.

Department who sent Greg Gullickson to share some of
