Safety Programs Well Attended

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

The Harvey Police Department’s goal is to remain active within the community both on and off duty.  Chief Ron Krivoruchka, Officer Marc Balfour and Officer Faye Axt give presentations to the community and to the school kids on various subjects.

In March 2007, Officer Balfour and Officer Axt gave a presentation at the Harvey Elementary School for Farmer’s Safety Day, dealing with driving under the influence.  A four wheeled pedal bike was used on a “driving” course.  Students wore the Fatal Vision goggles while they drove around the course, trying not to knock over the cones.  Officer Balfour also spoke to the students about ATV and roadway safety.

Yearly, Officer Balfour instructs the D.A.R.E. classes at the elementary school.  This has increased from one class for 12 weeks to two classes for 12 weeks.  Officer Balfour has also been requested by parents who home school to teach the class to their youth.

In conjunction with Wells County Health, Chief Ron K assisted with a bike safety course.  There were approximately 41 young bikers from the surrounding community involved.  Chief Ron K has also talked with students about Railroad crossing safety.

Officer Axt has assisted Safe Alternative for Abused Family program with going into the schools and talking about safe relationships and safe dating.  Officer Axt also talks with various groups, like the Cub Scouts about the benefits of wearing their seat-belts.  The group’s favorite topic is the “egg drop”, simulating a person hitting the airbag when it deploys.

Town Hall Meeting to Address Underage Drinking

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

The St. Aloisius Community Volunteer Program, Sources of Strength, will be sponsoring a Town Hall Meeting, for adults, to address underage drinking on Tuesday, March 11th. The meeting will start with a free supper at City Hall at 6:00 pm, followed by a short presentation at 7:00 pm.

Recent surveys with our youth show that underage drinking is a significant problem. It is real and it is affecting our kids, in our community, our neighborhoods and our homes.

Area youth will have met the week prior to this meeting to address alcohol issues and the suttle (and not so suttle) messages that they receive from society, which says that underage drinking is not only acceptable, but that it is almost expected. As parents, ministers, teachers and other community leaders, we need to show up and support their decision to take a stand against society’s norms. Please participate in this meeting to help empower our young people to make healthy choices about a growing problem that can affect them for the rest of their lives.

For more information, contact Tammy Neurohr at 324-4769 ext. 342 or 324-4700.

Empowered Youth Address Underage Drinking

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

The St. Aloisius Community Volunteer Program and SADD are proud to sponsor “Take It Back”, a project that is intended to empower youth to initiate a movement that will affect the way society views and portrays alcohol consumption. The subtle (and not so subtle) messages that youth receive on a daily basis about alcohol, not only implies that underage drinking is acceptable, but that it is almost expected. Today’s youth and teens are the leaders of tomorrow and they can demand a change!

Jocob Holm, SADD Student Leadership Council, will speak to students, grades 6 through college, at the Harvey High School commons area on March 4th. Free pizza and pop will be served at 6:30 pm with the presentation at 7:00 pm. This is open to Harvey and Anamoose students and college students who are home on spring break are encouraged to attend.

Be empowered! Take control! This is your world! Take it Back!

Wells Co. Mentoring Group Adopts a Soldier

Thursday, February 7th, 2008

mentoring-soldier.jpg     Wells Co. Mentoring adopts a soldier who is serving in Iraq as one of their service projects for the year.  Ron Selensky, from Selz, North Dakota, will receive his first care package from Wells Co. Mentoring by Valentines Day.  Mentors and their youth met to make home-made Valentines Day cards to put with Ron’s favorite snacks and other personal items in his care package.  As mentors and youth meet for their monthly activities, they will be looking for ways to include Ron in the program and let him know that he has local support from home.  This project provides an opportunity for kids to learn about current events, political issues and how they can have a personal impact on their world by reaching out to someone in their community.
