Media Class Digitizes Slides

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

The Media class at Harvey High School has completed a project for the Manfred Museum. Lester Burkham left about 1000 slides to the musesum. The museum did not have a way to show people the slides, so they enlisted the help of highschool students to digitize the slides. The class scanned and photographed the slides into a digital camera. The digital images were then loaded onto the musesum’s computer for viewing by the general public.

Please Support Our Youth By Voting Yes

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

Please vote “YES” on Tuesday, June 10th, in support of the Harvey Public Schools Technology Levy!

This levy will provide technology and computers necessary to provide the best, most competitive education for our children. It will develop a community technology center in HHS for the public’s benefit, integrate technology in teaching and learning K-12 and crate “Smart” interactive classrooms throughout our schools.

On a $75,000 home, the cost will be $16.88/year. On a $75,000 ag/commercial property, the cost will be $18.75/year. That’s roughly $1.50/month. You really can make a substantial difference.

This 5-Mill levy will cost the individual taxpayer very little, but will accomplish so much for the education of the student of our district. All tech levy funds will be used strictly for technology.

Please invest in our youth, our community, our future. You really can make a substantial difference!

If you have questions or comments, please contact Dan Stutlien, Supt., at 324-2265 or dan.stutlien@sendit.nodak.edu.

Seeking Senior Companions

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

The St. Aloisius Volunteer Program is now seeking two additional Senior Companions for our program. Senior Companions are healthy older adults who help other adults live independently. They provide support to family caregivers, assist with light chores or other daily tasks necessary to maintaining independence. They offer senior citizens encouragement to remain active, provide a helping hand to make sure they take their medication, a watchful eye to notice when extra care is needed and friendship that lasts a lifetime.

Without Senior Companions, many older adults would not be able to continue living at home and would need more expensive, less personal care.

Senior Companions are 60 years or older, can volunteer 20 hours a week, have limited income and enjoy helping their neighbors. They receive $2.64 per hour for visiting with others, which is considered a stipend , so it doesn’t affect social security income. For more information on the Senior Companion program call the St. Aloisius Community Volunteer Program at 324-4769 Ext. 342.

Boat Safety

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

*Be weather wise: Sudden wind shifts, lightning flashes and choppy water all can mean a storm is brewing. Bring a portable radio to check weather reports.

*Bring extra gear you may need: A flashlight, extra batteries, sun lotion, safety kit, sunglasses.

*Tell someone where you are going, who you are with, and how long you will be gone. Then check your boat equipment, boat balance, engine and fuel supply before you leave.

Tips For Keeping Kids Safe Around the Water

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

*Maintain constant supervision. Watch your children around water, no matter what their skills are or how shallow the water. For younger children, practice “Reach Supervision” by staying within an arm’s length reach.

*Don’t rely on substitutes. The use of flotation devices and inflatable toys can not replace parental supervision. Such devices can shift position, lose aiur or slip out form underneath, leaving the child in a dangerous situation.

*Enroll children in swimming lessons. Your decision to provide your child with an early aquatic experience is a gift that will have infinite rewards.
