SAAD Students illustrate a problem
Harvey SADD Tobacco Coalition helped clean the City of Harvey April 14th. SADD students went around Harvey cleaning up cigarette butts to celebrate Kick Butts Day.
The youth collected 25 pounds of butts in one hour. The winning group was Bobby Bartz, Kyle Keller, Jacob Zerr and Eric Kourajian. It was a learning experience for the kids; they held their bags out the car windows because of the awful smell.
Cigarette butts take 12 years to biodegrade because they are made of plastic. Cigarette litter is the world’s greatest environmental litter problem. Almost 1 in 3 butts end up as litter and can lead to arsenic poisoning in marine life. Children who find and ingest more than three butts may show signs of nicotine poisoning.
