Service Dog at Wells Co. Mentoring Activity

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

Sandy Sherlock and her service dog, Eddie recently did a presentation for the Wells Co. Mentoring group. Sandy talked about disabilities, including her personal challenges with multiplesclerosis. She also talked about service dogs and how hers was specifically trained as a mobility dog. Eddie demonstrated some of his many talents and skills, such as providing balance and stablilty for Sandy, picking up objects that she has dropped, being obedient to her commands, etc. The group also learned about pet care, training, and the responsibilities that go with having a dog like Eddie. This was a great educational project for the kids and they enjoyed giving Sandy and Eddie care packages as appreciation gifts (Eddies with special treats and doggie bones). When asked what their favorite part of the presentaion was, the kids said that it was all the things they learned and getting to actually play with Eddie after the presentation.

The Sources of Strength is the model we use for suicide prevention, which emphasizes assuring that all individuals have access to the eight components that assure health. Components consist of family support, good friends, healthy activities, role models/mentors, spirituality, opportunities for generosity and leadership, access to medical services and access to mental health services. For more information on the Sources of Strength or suicide prevention, contact the St. Aloisius Community Volunteer Program at 701-324-4769 Ext. 342.

SAAD Students illustrate a problem

Harvey SADD Tobacco Coalition helped clean the City of Harvey April 14th.  SADD students went around Harvey cleaning up cigarette butts to celebrate Kick Butts Day.

The youth collected 25 pounds of butts in one hour.  The winning group was Bobby Bartz, Kyle Keller, Jacob Zerr and Eric Kourajian.  It was a learning experience for the kids; they held their bags out the car windows because of the awful smell.

Cigarette butts take 12 years to biodegrade because they are made of plastic.  Cigarette litter is the world’s greatest environmental litter problem.  Almost 1 in 3 butts end up as litter and can lead to arsenic poisoning in marine life.  Children who find and ingest more than three butts may show signs of nicotine poisoning.
