Marvin gives to the Community

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

Harvey High School seniors will be offered another scholarship application thanks to  and benefactor Marvin Frey.  Frey has donated $10,000 through the Harvey Kiwanis to the Harvey High School.  The amount will be distributed in annual amounts of $1,000.

Frey attended the June Kiwanis meeting and presented his check to Dan Stutlien, the superintendent of Harvey Schools.  “I think this is a wonderful gesture for Marvin to do.  He’s providing kids with an opportunity,”  Stulien remarked.  “He could have done anything, but he chose to help others.  This scholarship will ensure someone who qualifies gets help.”

The main stipulation of the scholarship is that is goes to someone who isn’t already receiving a scholarship.  Frey, who is single and has no children, said he wanted to make sure his aid truly helped a student who needed it.  The first Marvin Frey Kiwanis Scholarship will be available to a 2009 Harvey High School graduate.

Harvey PD writes Grant to Stop Violence Against Women

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

The STOP Violence Against Women Formula Grant Program is designed to support communities in their efforts to develop and strengthen effective law enforcement and prosecution strategies to combat violent crimes against women and to develop and strengthen victim services in cases involving violent crimes against women.
North Dakota’s STOP Implementation Plan was developed to address implementation of victim-centered strategies that encourage law enforcement, prosecution, courts, victim advocates, nonprofit victim service providers, other components of the criminal justice system, and appropriate community agencies to collaborate within and among themselves in an effort to end violence against women.

Harvey Police Department Grant Application Summary:
The Harvey Police are requesting funding for a dedicated fax line, computer line, and computer to aid in confidentiality of domestic violence victim’s information and to provide secure instant information to victim’s advocates.  Currently, The Harvey Police do not have a confidential fax line nor a dedicated computer for processing of domestic violence cases with the prosecuting attorney and victims advocates.  A domestic violence fax and computer would drastically improve the rate at which the prosecution and victim advocates receive information from the police officers.
Harvey Police Department is requesting $ 2,229.37

Choir Tours Chicago

Friday, June 13th, 2008

After a 15 hour bus ride and three jam-packed days of fun in Chicago, the Harvey High School Choir returned home June 1st.

Their first day in Chicago, the students visited the Field Museum, where they performed.  They also attended the Broadway musical Wicked, which proved to be the favorite activity for the kids.  Day two the students attended a workshop with Professor Sue Moniger.  She gave them feedback, both positive and things they need to work on.

The students saw the Museum of Science and Industry, took in a game at Wrigley Field and were treated to a Wendella Boat Cruise on the river and Lake Michigan.  Their final day they attended a dolphin show at an aquarium, went shopping on the Magnificent Mile and visited Lincoln Park Zoo.  Their final stop was at Medieval Times in Schaumberg, Illinois.  Music Director, Heidi Olson say, “It was an unbelievable experience.  No one got in trouble, hurt, or lost, so it was a success!”
